Overall, the movie delivers some unexpected twists, a few colorful characters, and one very funny scene where Cathy pretends to be the wronged mistress of a Ukrainian baddie. I could have done without the pointless car chase, nice as it was to see Parry Shen, but it’s not a Jane Doe movie unless someone’s being pursued by car or helicopter. The investigation is a slow build, and sometimes the script hides too much in order to create a sense of mystery.
Polly and Simon shift the dynamics of the CSA team as well, and the personal relationships go a long way in plugging up gaps in the narrative. The two struggle to support each other in ways that don’t also interfere with their own ambitions and expectations. We see both Cathy’s competitiveness and uncertainty come through, her relationship with Polly a combination of trying to measure up to her mom while also wanting to carve out her own space. Polly exposes a different side of her daughter past challenges have strained Cathy’s home life or have stretched her mentally, but her mother’s arrival throws her off balance in another way.

The addition of Polly perks up the story and brings a personal element back to the series that was missing from the previous film. The CSA must find Smythe before terrorists do or, in a more sinister turn, before he sells the information to the highest bidder. The plan fails of course, and Smythe disappears from a cruise terminal when someone attacks his handler, Simon Custer (Clement von Franckenstein). British intelligence figures the best way to share this information with their American counterparts is to send Smythe overseas to personally deliver the files rather than to shoot the data over digitally and risk a hack. Because of his ability to remember just about anything, he’s been tasked with memorizing the identities and contacts of 165 deep cover agents. The man they’re looking for is Professor Iain Smythe (Michael Tomlinson), who’s serving his country in a most unusual way. Tensions bubble up between mother and daughter, but when a British asset goes missing, they come together to solve the case. The two share more than youthful looks and a knack for riddles, however, and in fact, Polly is also on the Central Security Agency’s payroll. Yes, I Remember It Well sees the arrival of the dazzling Polly (Donna Mills), mother of puzzle developer and occasional federal agent Cathy Davis (Lea Thompson). It’s a family affair in this fifth Jane Doe movie.
